Petrov and Covington dominate in Markelo

The World Championship enjoys its first break this season as there’s no GP during three weeks, but both Petar Petrov and Thomas Covington raced in the Dutch series last weekend to dominate the MX2 class.

Home of several GP’s in the past Markelo welcomed last weekend the fourth round of the Dutch Open series, and the Monster Energy Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team entered the event with two of his riders. Fastest rider in the qualifying session Petar Petrov was the strongest man in the MX2 class, as the Bulgarian won both races just one week after he celebrates his first ever GP podium. His main contender was teammate Thomas Covington, very impressive in the Dutch sand; fifth in the practice session, Thomas passed twice Harry Kullas to lead both races during most of each period. With two-second positions, the American teenager got a strong result and confirmed that he will be one of the men to follow during the last GP’s of the season.

Petar Petrov: “It was definitively another good weekend, as I was the fastest in the qualifying session and won both motos. It was fun, I didn’t want to take any risks and just ride my race. Thomas was riding really well so we had a good battle. I feel good, it’s great to be again on the podium and now I’m looking forward to Mantova and expect there some strong results too.”

Thomas Covington: “It was a fun weekend racing with Petar and we had two really close races. With two laps to go in both motos I just got caught in some lap riders and Petar was able to make the pass on me right at the end. I would have liked to win but it was still a positive weekend, now I’ll get ready for Mantova in two weeks.”
